Interviewer: Dr. Sharma, what was the biggest challenge you faced? Dr. Sharma: The medical system was so different. In India, I was a respected physician. Here, I had to prove myself all over again. I had to pass multiple exams, in a new language, with new terminology. It was humbling. At the same time, I had two young children. My husband worked long hours. So I would study after the children were asleep, often until 2 or 3 in the morning. Interviewer: How did you maintain your cultural roots? Dr. Sharma: It was very important for us. We made sure to speak Hindi at home. We celebrated Diwali and Holi with other Indian families we met. We wanted our children to know where they came from. It was a balancing act, integrating into American society while preserving our Indian soul. My clinic today serves many immigrant families. I understand their struggles, not just medically, but culturally. It's my way of giving back.
